Plainfield: Mary M. Smith, 83 of Plainfield passed away Wednesday January 27, 2010 at JFK Hospital in Edison. Mrs. Smith was born and raised in Greensburg, PA and had lived in Mt. Pleasant, PA and North Plainfield, NJ before moving to Plainfield in 1955.
She received her Bachelor's degree from Seton Hill College in Greensburg and later received her Master's Degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh. She was a mathematics teacher at Plainfield High School for 3 years and later taught in Mendham at the Sisters of Charity Academy.
Mrs. Smith was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Plainfield as well as a member of the Rosary Society. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She especially loved gardening, traveling and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 52 years, Arthur W. Smith; her sons; Stephen Smith and his wife Colleen of Somerset, Daniel Smith and his wife Mary of Mechanicsville, MD, and Gregory Smith and his wife Leanne of San Antonio, TX; her daughters; Ann Teach and her husband Brad of Burlington, NJ, and Mary Jean Smith of Plainfield. Also surviving are her brother, William Miller and his wife Mary Lou of Pittsburgh, PA, as well as her sister, Sr. Anna Marie Miller of the Seton Hill Sisters of Charity, Greensburg, PA. She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren; Andrew, David, Elizabeth, Bryan, Cara, Evelyn, Riley, Dana and Stacey.
Visitation will be held at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 West Eighth Street, Plainfield on Sunday January 31, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral services will be held on Monday February 1 at 9:30am at Higgins Home for Funerals followed by a 10:30am Mass of Resurrection at St. Mary's Church in Plainfield. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
