Obituary of Helen A Werthwein

Helen A. Werthwein, age 92, of Bridgewater, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2015. Born in New Geneva, PA on September 13, 1922, she subsequently moved to Garwood where she was raised, and lived for many years in Green Brook before moving to Bridgewater. In her youth, roller skating became her passion where she excelled in the dance steps and was a popular figure at the roller rink. She was employed for many years as a bank teller and retired from General Cable Company where she held a position as a bookkeeper. In Garwood she was active in community affairs for many years. In scouting she was a brownie and Intermediate leader. From Mel Allen, a renowned baseball commentator, she learned the finer parts of baseball through television, and became a Little League official score keeper. She was a member of the Garwood Women's Club and active in the music department. As a bowling enthusiast she engaged in league play and won many trophies. Her hobby was in arts and crafts, particularly crewel and ceramics. Also as a world traveler she kissed the Blarney Stone and walked on China's Great Wall. She is predeceased by her 5 brothers and 3 sisters. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Herbert; her son, Norman and his wife, Frances of California and Martha's Vineyard; her daughter, Gail and her husband, Steven of Fanwood; her grandchildren, Kristine, Derek, Gabrielle and Briana. Cremation is private and held under the direction of Higgins Home For Funerals, Watchung.
