Obituary of Arthur James Lewis MD

Dr. Arthur J. Lewis died on February 16, 2017 in South Pasadena, FL after a brief illness. He graduated from Xavier High School in New York City and received his BA and MD from NYU School of Medicine. Boarded in Internal Medicine, he championed Seton Hall College of Medicine as Assistant Dean and then Dean during its transition to NJ College of Medicine. He became Chief of Staff at St. Clare's Hospital in NYC , then the Director of Education at East Orange Veteran's Hospital in NJ. Later, he was named Chief of Staff at the Memphis VA Hospital, affiliated with the University of Tennessee. He moved to Northern Virginia when he became the Medical Director of Health Services in the Central Office of Veterans Affairs in Washington DC. After serving as Medical Chief of Staff at the Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, Dr. Lewis retired. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling and cruising with Marilyn, his devoted wife of over 63 years. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn O’Gara Lewis, his sister, Claire Stickel, and his six children: Mary Ellen Schieding (Eric), Lizanne Sosnowski (Robert), Arthur Lewis Jr (Cathe), Kathleen Lewis, Jamie Lewis (Kathy) and Allison Lewis Lee. Also grandchildren Rebecca, Meghan and Dan and great granddaughter, Makayla. A visitation will be held on Saturday February 25, 2017 from 8:30 to 9:30 am at Higgins Home for Funerals 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung NJ 07069 followed by a mass at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Martinsville, NJ at 10 a.m.. Following the mass, Dr. Lewis will be laid to rest at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
