Obituary of Alfred O. Meissner

Alfred O. Meissner, 85 passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday April 7th, 2017 following a long illness. He was born in Plainfield New Jersey on December 3, 1931 a son of the late Hans and Jessie Meissner. He Lived in South Plainfield, New Jersey before moving to North Plainfield 64 years ago. He was a graduate of North Plainfield High School class of 1951. Before his long dedicated career with the North Plainfield Police Department, Mr. Meissner was a United States Navy Veteran, during the Korean War. He was active on the USS Heyliger. He then spent a lifetime of service to his community as a police officer with the North Plainfield Police Department. Mr. Meissner began his career with the North Plainfield Police Department and completed his 40 year career as Lieutenant retiring June 1, 1997. He was known for checking in with merchants in town, just to make sure everything was going well for them. After retirement, he enjoyed long walks when he would check in with his friends and merchants along his route, stopping in to visit and catching up on local news. Also after retirement, Mr. Meissner worked part time for Scarpa Funeral Home. There, he coordinated all aspects of funerals, helping things go smoothly. Again, getting to know all along his travels, with a friendly word for everyone. The Lieutenant will be sorely missed, after a long and resolute life of dedication to the citizens of North Plainfield. Mr. Meissner was a member of Saint Josephs RC Church. Also a member of the VFW-Elks of Warren, and the Italian American Club of North Plainfield. He is predeceased by a sister, June Meissner, who died March 25, 2005. Mr. Meissner is survived by his wife of 64 years Carol, a son Alfred of Williams Twp, PA and a daughter, Carol of North Plainfield. A visitation be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, from 5-9 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funeral, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, NJ 07069. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 19th at 9 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's RC Church, North Plainfield. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
