Obituary of Irving Samuel Tanzer

Irving Samuel Tanzer, age 91, died on Monday, November 20, 2017 at JFK Hospital in Edison. Born in Plainfield, he had been a lifelong resident. Irv served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946, receiving the Purple Heart. He graduated from Plainfield High School and Pace College, NY. He owned and operated a liquor store in Plainfield from 1937-1983. After retiring he worked part time at Higgins Home for Funerals, in Plainfield and Watchung. Irv was a member of Temple Beth El in Scotch Plains and was very active in the Jewish Community Center in Plainfield serving as its president. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his family. Survived by his wife Roda Lee (Steinberg) Tanzer; his children Andrew Tanzer and his wife Gail, Mimi Cohen and her husband Ben Lerner and Peter Tanzer; grandchildren Beth and Sarah Cohen and Frances Tanzer; great-grandchildren Hazel Leary Cohen, Wesley Jacob Butz and Shane Emerson Butz; his sister Edith Luray. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
