Obituary of Arthur Walter Smith

Arthur Walter Smith, Jr. age 89, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung. Born and raised in Phillipsburg, he had resided in North Plainfield from 1957-1964, Plainfield from 1964-2011 and Scotch Plains from 2011-2012, before moving to Watchung in recent years. Arthur served with the U.S Marine Corp. from 1950-1952. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School, Lafayette College with a B.A. and Lehigh University with a Masters of Fine Arts. Arthur was a teacher of Biology at Plainfield High School, he also taught Biology/Science at Watchung Hills Regional High School from 1957-1959. He went on to become a Guidance Counselor at Watchung Hills Regional High School in Watchung from 1959-1992. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Plainfield for many years. In his spare time he enjoyed camping and traveling. Arthur played the piano, clarinet and saxophone and was the leader of the Art Smith & Associates Band. He also volunteered playing music at retirement centers and nursing homes with his band members. Predeceased by his wife Mary Miller in 2010. Survived by his children Stephen and his wife Colleen, Ann, Daniel and his wife Mary, Greg and his wife Leane and Mary Jean; grandchildren Andrew, David, Elizabeth, Dana, Stacey, Bryan, Cara, Evelyn and Riley. A visitation will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018 from 4-8 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. A gathering will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Plainfield. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
