Obituary of Stephen Horvath

Mr. Stephen Pista Horvath, 67, died Monday, November 10, 2003 at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan. Born in Sopronkovesd, Hungary, he escaped communist Hungary in 1954 to Austria where he resided for 2 years. After the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, he came to the United States, settling in New Brunswick. He lived in Jamesburg for 4 years and South River for 3 years before moving to Green Brook in 1970. Prior to retiring in 2001, Mr. Horvath was employed as a crane operator by Public Service, Electric and Gas in Elizabeth for 45 years. Mr. Horvath graduated from Polytechnicum in Hungary in 1956 and LaSalle Extension University. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, Local # 94 of Elizabeth, the West End Deli Club of Green Brook and was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Dunellen. He was a former member of the Hungarian American Athletic Club of New Brunswick. He enjoyed physical activities such as walking, lifting weights and chopping wood for his fireplace at home. He was predeceased by his mother Terezia Horvath in 1976, his father Istvan Horvath in 1988 and a brother, Erno Horvath, in 1991. Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Matilda V. Babe Ruhl Horvath, one son Stephen J. Horvath and his wife Elizabeth of Branchburg, a daughter, Heidi A. Horvath and her fianc Robert Bruce Houillion of Las Vegas, NV and Pop Pops granddaughter Hanna Ashlynn Houillion and one niece Edina Horvath in Hungary. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 15 at 9:15 am from the Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, followed by a 10 am funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Washington Avenue, Dunellen and entombment at St. Marys Stony Hill Cemetery in Watchung. Visitation Thursday 7-9 pm and Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
