Dr. Alan Leslie Nudelman
May 23, 1943 – Feb 15, 2025
Dr. Alan Nudelman (81), a long-time Haworth resident, respected psychologist, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on February 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on May 23, 1943, in the Bronx, New York, Alan grew up in the historic Moshulu Parkway neighborhood, a community renowned for its famous residents. His early years in this unique neighborhood were foundational to his character, instilling in him a deep appreciation for life, humor, and interpersonal connections.
Alan’s career path was not without its humorous detours. Initially a substitute teacher, his role swiftly ended after a principal observed the chaos in his classroom and kindly suggested that teaching might not be his calling. This brief stint proved to be pivotal for Alan, however, as it was during this time that he met the love of his life, Sheila. Alan and Sheila married in 1968, then furthered their educational paths all while expanding their family. They made a home in Haworth, New Jersey, where they raised their two children, Richard and Andrea. Together, Alan and his family shared many wonderful years together, building a life filled with love, adventure, and countless cherished memories.
Alan’s academic journey was one of dedication and achievement. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from City College of New York. Furthering his education, he completed his PhD in psychology at Hofstra University. He subsequently opened a successful private practice in New City, New York. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alan had a knack for building computers, a passion for photography, an interest in learning and trying new things, and an affection for the outdoors. As a lover of nature, he found solace in the beauty of the world around him. His family fondly remembers his philosophy of never taking a single day for granted.
Alan is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Sheila, who was his steadfast partner for over five decades and cared for him throughout his illness. He is also survived by his two children, Richard Nudelman and Andrea Kurzner, in addition to their spouses, Ruby King and Robert Kurzner, respectively. Alan’s legacy lives on through his cherished granddaughter, Zoey Kurzner (the best medicine the doctors prescribed), who brought him so much joy.
Alan is survived by his brother, Martin Nudelman. He was predeceased by his sister, Lois Nudelman, and sister-in-law, Gloria Nudelman. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Ira Hammer, and sister-in-law, Mary Capozzelli, whose dedication and support brought Alan comfort throughout his journey. He is survived by his nieces, Abby Nudelman and Sara Sethi; his nephews, Brian Nudelman, Eric Nudelman, and David Hammer; and many cousins who will remember him fondly.
A memorial service to honor Alan’s remarkable life will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, NJ. He will be laid to rest at Beth Israel Cemetery, 1098 Woodbridge Center Dr., Woodbridge, NJ.
