Obituary of Lucia A. McHugh
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Lucia “Lucy” McHugh (née Suriano), who departed this world peacefully on February 27, 2025, after bravely battling cancer for over a year. Born on December 13, 1962, Lucy was a loving mother, wife, sister, friend, and aunt whose presence brought laughter, love, and kindness to all who knew her.
Lucy was born in Plainfield, NJ and grew up in a large Italian family. Her early years were marked by her close friendship with her sister Virginia “Jeanne” Suriano, a bond that would follow her throughout her life.
Lucy married her beloved husband, John, and together they built a home filled with love and warmth. Lucy is survived by her daughter, Emily McHugh, who tended to her care throughout the year; loving son, Mason McHugh; sisters Carmela Scarpone (Paolo) and Maria Lanza; brothers Frank (Kathy) and John Suriano (Robin); nieces, and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister Jeanne, brother Anthony, and parents Matilde and John.
Lucy’s legacy is one of compassion, generosity, and unwavering dedication to her loved ones. She was hilarious and fun, knew how to cook amazing food, and threw great parties. Lucy was a hairdresser and business owner, opening and operating Lucia’s Creative Hair Design in Dunellen. She was an artist, prolific gardener, dog lover, and beach goer, but above all, a mom who truly enjoyed spending time with her children. She cared for others even in her time of need, supported and loved her family unconditionally, and was always there to listen without judgement. Though she is no longer with us, her fighting spirit and beautiful smile will live in the hearts and minds of everyone she touched.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 4t,h from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, with a 6:00 pm funeral service at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069 to celebrate Lucy's remarkable life. Friends and family are invited to attend and share their memories.
Lucy will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. May she rest in peace.
