Obituary of Liza Elizabeth Roane
October 26, 1929 – May 1, 2025
Liza Elizabeth Roane, affectionately known to many as “Mother,” passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. She was 95 years old.
Born on October 26, 1929, in King William County, Virginia, Liza spent her early years surrounded by the close-knit bonds of family and community. As a teenager, she moved to Newark, New Jersey, where she built a life rooted in hard work, love, and faith. In 1979, she proudly purchased her own home—a place that became a beloved anchor for her and her family.
Liza devoted 39 years of service as a phlebotomist at Overlook Hospital, where she was known for her dedication, professionalism, and gentle spirit. She retired in January of 1992, having carefully planned for her golden years, which she embraced with joy and grace.
A woman of cherished routines and heartfelt connections, Liza found joy in the simple pleasures of daily life. She rarely missed her favorite soap operas and could often be found sitting at her window—her beloved “post”—watching over her neighborhood with quiet affection. Every morning, she enjoyed her favorite breakfast: a decaf cup of coffee and a banana in her oatmeal.
Above all, Liza treasured her family. Her days were filled with phone conversations with her vast circle of loved ones—nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends—each call a testament to her unwavering love and her desire to remain deeply connected. Her family, in turn, remained devoted to her, constantly checking in and surrounding her with their care.
Liza found spiritual fulfillment in studying with the Irvington Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was actively engaged in their teachings, drawing great comfort and meaning from her faith.
Liza was predeceased by her beloved parents, her dear daughter Paulette Roane Daniels (who passed away in January 2021), and all eleven of her siblings. Though she endured many losses, her heart remained full, sustained by a loving and extensive family.
She leaves behind a legacy of strength, warmth, and unwavering love. Liza is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends—each of whom was touched by her kindness, love, and enduring spirit.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. A funeral talk will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Cremation services will be held privately.
Liza Elizabeth Roane will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Her voice, her warmth, and her wisdom will echo in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
