Obituary of Robert Chang
Robert Chang
August 21, 1973 – June 2, 2025
Robert Chang passed away on Monday, June 2, 2025. A devoted husband, father, son, and friend, Robert lived a life defined by quiet strength, deep compassion, and a contagious zest for living.
Born on August 21, 1973 in Taiwan, Robert immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of eight, settling in Buffalo, New York—a city that remained close to his heart, especially as a lifelong and enthusiastic Buffalo Bills fan. It was in Buffalo that Robert spent his formative years before heading west to attend California State University, Fullerton, where he pursued a degree in biochemistry.
A pivotal moment in Robert’s life came during a spring break trip to China in 1998, when he was introduced—on a blind date—to Fang Zhou affectionately known as Liz. That encounter would change the course of his life. The connection was instant and profound. Liz soon moved to Massachusetts for graduate school at Amherst, and after finishing his studies in California, Robert followed her east. The couple married shortly before the turn of the century, in December of 1999, beginning a loving partnership that would span more than 25 years.
While in Massachusetts, Robert earned his master’s degree in computer science from Boston University. He went on to build a successful career as a pharmaceutical consultant, bringing his sharp intellect, diligence, and quiet determination to every project he touched. His work took him across companies and teams, but his commitment to excellence and integrity never wavered.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Robert was a man of many passions. During his time in California, he discovered a love for surfing—an activity that became a lifelong pursuit and a source of peace and joy. Whether riding waves along the coast of California or in the waters off Manasquan, New Jersey, Robert found solace in the sea. He especially treasured teaching his family how to surf, passing along both the skills and the love for the ocean.
Robert was also a gifted chef, known particularly for his desserts and his unforgettable Thanksgiving feasts. He took great pride in hosting family gatherings, and his kitchen was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the delicious scents of dishes lovingly prepared.
Robert was a long time animal lover and caregiver. Most recently, he kept a beloved rabbit, Pluto who often kept Robert company while working, sitting on the edge of the couch.
He also enjoyed science fiction, finding inspiration and wonder in imagined worlds, and always made time to cheer on his beloved Buffalo Bills—especially during their recent years of success.
Above all, Robert was a devoted family man. His daughter, Ella, was the center of his universe. Every decision, every dream, every moment was shaped by his love and devotion to her. His joy in fatherhood was evident to all who knew him, and his presence in Ella’s life was as constant as it was profound.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Liz; his cherished daughter, Ella; and his loving mother, Fang Lin. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him, but the legacy of his kindness, loyalty, and love will live on.
