Obituary of Marie Gray
Marie Gray, 88, of Warren, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Somerville, surrounded by her devoted family.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 24, 1936, Marie was the cherished daughter of Vincent (Jim) Piro and Giovanna (Jennie) Tronzano Piro. She was raised on Skillman Avenue, next door to her grandparents and surrounded by a large, close-knit Italian family. Her early years in Brooklyn, and later Middle Village, Queens, shaped her fierce loyalty, sharp wit, and lifelong love of family, food, and learning.
The first in her family to go to college, Marie graduated from the prestigious Pratt Institute in 1958 with a degree in Fine Arts and began her career as an art teacher in the New York City public schools. After marrying the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Gray, she transitioned into the occupation she considered her most important: homemaker, mother, and matriarch. When asked about putting her college education into that role, she would quip, “Educate a man and you get an educated man. Educate a woman and you educate the entire family.”
A fiercely intelligent, talented and endlessly curious woman, Marie was a voracious reader, crossword puzzle whiz, and passionate Jeopardy! fan who rarely missed a question—or an episode. Marie’s breathtaking paintings adorn the walls of many who loved her. She approached everything with gusto, from learning about world cultures to crafting a five-course meal on a weeknight. Her kids often joke they didn’t know it was unusual to have from-scratch shrimp tempura, homemade meatballs with pasta, and a whipped-cream chocolate-cookie cake on a random Tuesday. Her food was legendary, her table always full, and her kitchen open to all.
Marie had no patience for nonsense, no filter for false niceties, and did not suffer fools. She told it like it was, loved with her whole heart, and defended her people like a lioness. Her presence filled a room—bold, funny, and utterly unignorable. She gave generously, hosted graciously, and celebrated heartily. She invited everyone into her orbit, whether it was a beach house in Spring Lake or a farmhouse in Tuscany, because to her, joy was best when shared.
She was tireless in her care for others. If someone she loved was going through a hard time—or even just having a birthday—they could expect a homemade afghan, a tray of food, a box of carefully chosen gifts, or a bouquet of flowers arriving at their door. Her hands were always busy making something for someone else. And her generosity didn’t stop with friends and family—dozens of charities and causes were lifted over the years by her steadfast support, often without fanfare.
Over the years, she called many places home: Brooklyn, Queens, Westfield, Spring Lake, and finally Warren. But wherever she lived, Marie made it a place of warmth, laughter, and beauty. She filled her spaces with her artwork, handmade afghans, and blooming gardens—and most of all, with love.
Marie is survived by her devoted children: Bob (Clare), Jeni GrayRoberts (Jerry), and Chris (Cynthia); her adored grandchildren who brought her endless joy: Robert, Skye, Zachary, Jacqueline Rose, Logan, Churchill and Brody; her beloved sister, JoAnne O’Sullivan (John); and her brother-in-law Barry Gorman. She is also survived by many treasured nieces and nephews, as well as lively and loving grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert "Bob"; her sister, Theresa (Terry) Gorman; and her parents.
Marie’s life was a brilliant blend of heart and fire—unapologetically herself, deeply devoted to her family, and endlessly generous to all. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty that will live on in all who knew her.
Memorial donations may be made in Marie Gray’s honor to Mercy Ships or Doctors Without Borders.
