Richard Velez

Richard Velez, of South Bound Brook, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, at JFK Medical Center in Edison after a long illness.

Born in Plainfield, Richard grew up between North Plainfield and Puerto Rico, a childhood that instilled in him a deep pride in his Puerto Rican heritage. Over the years he also made his home in North Plainfield before settling in South Bound Brook with his family.

Richard built his career in the towing industry, where he worked for more than 17 years. For the last 13 years he was a proud and dedicated manager at Rich’s Off Road Towing in Manville. He loved his work and took great pride in the company and in his role, always wearing his manager’s shirt with a smile and a sense of accomplishment.

A man of many passions, Richard had a lifelong love for salsa music. He could often be found dancing salsa and merengue, joyfully encouraging others to join him. He also enjoyed cooking, especially Puerto Rican dishes, which he took the time to learn and prepare with pride. His love for cars was another constant in his life—whether it was racing or adding personal touches like tinted windows and details to his own vehicles.

Above all else, Richard was a devoted husband and father. His children were the center of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them—whether watching Bluey with his youngest daughter, Lyla, enjoying lifetime movies with his daughter Mia, or simply spending time with his son Ryan. His family remembers him as a proud Puerto Rican man, full of life, love, and warmth, who lived for his children and shared his joy with those around him.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Olivia; his cherished children, Ryan, Mia, and Lyla; his sister, Jesek Velez and her children Ivan, Leilani, Davian, and Suhaily and his parents, Eleuterio and Carmen L.. He also leaves behind many extended family members and close friends who will forever treasure his memory.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, August 25, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, NJ. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 27, at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Cemetery in South Plainfield.

Richard will be remembered for his unwavering pride in his heritage, his love of music and family, and his dedication to his work. His spirit will live on in the lives of those he touched.
