Lynda Murphy MacLeod Obituary

“A family united in love is the greatest blessing of all.”

— Irish Proverb

Lynda Marie Murphy MacLeod, 77, of Brick, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving morning, November 27, 2025, after a courageous 10-year battle with dementia. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, on December 9, 1947, Lynda was the beloved daughter of Edward J. Murphy and Helen Conn Murphy.

Lynda grew up with a gentle, caring spirit that touched everyone in her life. She graduated from Watchung Hills Regional High School, where she met her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, William “Billy” J. MacLeod. Their love story—full of resilience, partnership, and unwavering support—lasted more than 56 years, beginning with their marriage on June 14, 1969.

Though petite in stature, Lynda possessed a remarkable inner strength. Throughout her life, she faced significant health challenges with relentless courage, grace, and determination. She never gave up. She met every hardship with a quiet, powerful resilience that defined her spirit.

Lynda was known not only for her warmth and kindness, but also for her stunning beauty—inside and out. With her bright smile, graceful presence, and the natural elegance she carried throughout her life, she had a way of lighting up every room she entered.

Guided by compassion and a deep desire to help others, Lynda pursued a career in nursing. She cared for countless patients during her years at Overlook Hospital, Raritan Valley Hospital, and several local medical practices. After stepping away from nursing to raise her family, she continued sharing her gifts with children as a dedicated teacher and school nurse at Creative Pre-School in Warren. Her creativity, patience, and kindness shone through every day, and many young lives were brightened simply by being in her presence.

Lynda lived a life filled with creativity and a strong sense of community. Her creativity extended to every corner of her home: intricate Halloween costumes, handmade blankets and crafts, and carefully crafted, beautiful Christmas stockings for each grandchild, each made with love and attention to detail. She also served as a Pop Warner cheerleading coach and helped establish a crocheting club at Valley View School in Watchung, where she and the students created scarves and hats for local shelters. Lynda enjoyed sewing, music, photography, and crafting—always finding beauty in the little things and sharing it generously.

For 36 years, Lynda was a devoted member of Saint Martin’s Episcopal Church. Her faith remained a quiet, steady source of strength. She cherished the traditions and sense of peace the church brought her. Lynda also had great pride in her Irish heritage, which was reflected in her spirituality and the values she instilled in her family.

Lynda found immense joy in the places she loved most. She spent her summers in Point Pleasant, at the Jersey Shore, where many of her happiest childhood memories were made. Life came full circle when she was able to return there for her final seven years, living on the water off the Barnegat Bay, where it all began. She loved the sunshine, being out on the boat, and the Outer Banks held a special place in her heart. These coastal moments were some of her greatest sources of peace and happiness.

Above all, Lynda’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Billy; and her three children: William “B.J.” MacLeod, Jr.; Lauryn MacLeod Kervel and her husband, Michael; and Heather MacLeod Thiry and her husband, Daryl. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Ryan, Brittany Hodgin, and her husband, Ian; Amber, Lainey, Dylin, and Samantha. She was also a joyful great-grandmother to her treasured great-grandson, Mac.

Lynda will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, her courage, her breathtaking beauty, her love of the shore and the sea, and the gentle way she made every person feel seen, valued, and loved.

In place of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Lynda’s memory to Alzheimer’s New Jersey or NAMI New Jersey—organizations that support dementia research, mental health awareness, and causes close to the family’s heart.

Her legacy of love, compassion, strength, and beauty will live on through all who were blessed to know her.
