Kenneth R. Ahles, age 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at JFK Hospital in Edison, New Jersey.
Ken was born on October 26, 1942, in Englewood, New Jersey, to the late Walter and Seline Ahles. He was raised in Weehawken through the sixth grade, after which his family relocated to Bergenfield, New Jersey. Over the years, Ken’s life would take him through several New Jersey communities. After Bergenfield, he spent time living in what was then known as West Paterson, New Jersey (now Woodland Park), before ultimately settling in North Plainfield, New Jersey, where he made his home beginning in 1972.
Ken was a proud graduate of Bergenfield High School, where he was an active member of the marching band, playing the saxophone. One especially memorable highlight from his high school years was marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, an experience he fondly remembered. Following graduation, Ken furthered his education at New York University, where he earned a degree in finance.
Professionally, Ken built a steady and respected career as an account manager, a role in which he was known for his reliability, integrity, and thoughtful attention to detail. Over the years, he worked for several well-known companies, including Baker’s Book Distribution, Reeves in New York City, Equitable in New York City, Häagen-Dazs in the Bronx, and later Thul Automotive Stores in Plainfield, New Jersey. In each position, he was valued for his dedication and quiet professionalism.
It was at a friend’s wedding, during his younger years, that Ken met Barbara Zielke. What began as a chance meeting soon became a lifelong partnership. Ken and Barbara were married in 1968 and went on to build a loving family together, sharing nearly six decades of marriage marked by devotion, respect, and companionship.
Ken was a member of the Jaycees (Junior Chamber), a civic organization dedicated to leadership development, community service, and fostering positive change. Through his involvement, Ken enjoyed giving back to his community while forming lasting friendships and connections.
Family was at the center of Ken’s life. He took great joy in supporting his children and was always willing to lend a helping hand. While he was not formally a pack leader, Ken generously volunteered his time helping with his son Craig’s Boy Scouts pack, quietly offering support and encouragement whenever it was needed. His presence was steady, dependable, and deeply appreciated by those closest to him.
An adventurous spirit guided many of Ken’s interests. He loved being on the water and boating, including a memorable trip he and Barbara took by boat to the World Expo in Montreal, Canada. He also enjoyed water skiing at Lake Hopatcong, embracing the excitement and freedom of time spent outdoors. Camping was another cherished family tradition, with trips spanning much of the East Coast, from Maine down through the Carolinas, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Closer to home, Ken found joy in simpler pleasures. He loved card games and family game nights, moments filled with laughter and togetherness. He was an avid model train enthusiast, taking pride in his collection and the craftsmanship involved. Gardening was another passion, and it became a meaningful bonding experience with his son as they grew dahlias together, carefully harvesting and storing them each winter in preparation for the next growing season.
Ken will be remembered as a quiet, caring, and selfless man. He had a warm heart, a gentle sense of humor, and a kind, steady presence that made others feel at ease. His thoughtfulness and generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Ken was predeceased by his baby brother, Wayne Ahles, who passed away in 1950 at the age of five.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara E. Ahles; his two children, Craig Ahles and his wife Tammy, and Caryn Snyder and her husband John; his four cherished grandchildren, Katlyn Womer, Brielle Snyder, Kendall Snyder, and Luke Snyder; and his beloved great-grandchild, Bella Willey.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, New Jersey 07069, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Cremation services will be private.
