Elizabeth "Betty" Speronza Obituary
Elizabeth “Betty” Speronza
Elizabeth “Betty” Speronza, age 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey.
Born on January 3, 1944, in Jersey City, Betty was the youngest of three beloved daughters of Ignazio and Angelina DePinto.
Betty was raised in the Heights section of Jersey City, graduated from Dickinson High School and then began her professional career at Western Electric in NYC where she met her future husband Peter Speronza. Their friendship blossomed into a lifelong love, and the two were married at St. Nicholas Church in Jersey City, beginning a devoted partnership centered around a strong sense of family that defined her upbringing.
After starting their family, Betty dedicated herself to raising their children and creating a warm and welcoming home. Later, she returned to the workforce, first working in her sister’s family business, Superior Whole Meats in Jersey City and then at Maidenform in Bayonne. Her final professional chapter was spent at Holy Spirit School in Union, New Jersey, where she served as administrative assistant, managing the day to day operations of the school. She was always a familiar and friendly presence to students, families, and faculty alike until her retirement in 2019.
Betty had a vibrant spirit and an enthusiasm for life’s simple pleasures. She loved good food and a great cook who delighted in sharing meals with family and friends. She especially loved the family home in Lavallette, NJ, a place always filled with many happy memories. Above all else, Betty found her greatest joy in her family. Nothing meant more to her than being surrounded by the people she loved, especially her cherished grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Peter Speronza, who passed away on June 28, 2010. She was also predeceased by her sister, Louise Caldarola, and her husband, Sam, and her sister, Anna Kuryla and her husband, Walter.
Betty is survived by her loving children, son Peter Speronza and his wife Matina, and daughter Lynn Hionis and her husband Pete. She was the proud and devoted grandmother of Nikolas, Sofia, Elizabeth, and Nondas, who brought immense happiness to her life. “Grammy Girl” will be greatly missed.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, from 4 PM to 8 PM at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at 10:30 AM at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 971 Suburban Rd., Union, NJ 07083, followed by entombment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.
