John J. Schomp Jr. (Jack), age 88, of Watchung, NJ, passed away in his home on April 7, 2026.   

Jack was born in Elizabeth, NJ to Anna Elizabeth Schomp (nee Waldron) and John Jacob Schomp.  He graduated Jefferson High School in Elizabeth before starting a long and dedicated career to support his family. Jack started as a Tool and Die Maker for 10 years. He then worked for 50 years at Proctor & Gamble as a Machinist Specialist in their Staten Island, NY and Avenel, NJ plants, before finally retiring at age 80. Outside of work, he enjoyed spending time and vacations with his wife, Margaret (Joan) and children. He liked to hunt and salt-water fish and was a long-time member of the Linden Rod and Gun Club. He was also fond of his pets, dogs and cats. Jack will be remembered for his strong work ethic, dedication to family, and fun-loving, calm, low-stress demeanor. 

Jack is survived by his four children- Mark, Greg and David Schomp and Heather Smiles, 4 grandchildren- Megan Riley, Nicole Dowzycki, Taylor Piane and Benjamin Smiles, 4 step-grandchildren- Erica Nicholsen, Erin Anger, Amanda Cauble and Christina Schultz, 3 great-grandchildren- Alexander and Hudson Dowzycki and Aiden Piane and 3 great step-grandchildren- Mia and RJ Anger and Logan Alexander. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan, parents Anna and John, brother Robert and child Jon-Jon.

Visitation will be held at Higgins Funeral Home at 752 Mountain Blvd. in Watchung on Friday, April 10, from 6-9 pm. A grave-side service is set for 11:30 am on Saturday, April 11 at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.
