Barbara Ruth Diem, a treasured member of the Watchung community and a symbol of enduring faith and happiness, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Born on December 2, 1929, in Piscataway, New Jersey, to Ralph and Ruth Barrett, Barbara was a lifelong resident of Watchung. She graduated from North Plainfield High School, where she met the love of her life Freddy Diem, a classmate.
Barbara and Freddy were married in August of 1950 and their union was one filled with love and shared values.
Barbara was a lifelong member of Wilson Memorial Church. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing strength and guidance through all times. Those who knew Barbara will fondly remember her sweet smile, her unwavering optimism, and her ability to maintain a strong spirit even in challenging times. Her demeanor was a testament to her resilient character.
Barbara's talents were many, but she was particularly renowned for her skill in quilting and baking. Her apple pies became a symbol of her warmth and generosity, gracing countless holiday tables and community events. Her home, was the heart of family celebrations, especially Christmas, which she hosted with love and dedication for countless years.
Barbara was honored by the Watchung Mayor and the Borough Council with a resolution, acknowledging her as a recipient of the Somerset County Office of Aging's Profiles of Positive Aging Recognition Award and she was a member and chairperson of the Watchung Historical Committee and a devoted congregant at Wilson Memorial Union Church, her contributions were profound and lasting.
One of Barbara's most notable achievements was the commission and installation of the stunning stained glass windows at Wilson Memorial Church, a project she led passionately with her close friend, Betty Jean Aldrich. These windows are a blend of artistic beauty and personal significance, which are a symbol of her deep-rooted commitment to the community along with her sincere love in the restoration of the Texier House in her home town of Watchung. Her dedication earned her the inaugural Historical Committee Lifetime Membership Distinction Award.
Above all, Barbara was a devoted homemaker and a loving mother to five children. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, cherishing moments with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her legacy is not just in her public achievements but also in the love, guidance, and values she imparted to her family.
Barbara is predeceased by her loving husband, Frederick E. Diem. She leaves behind a loving family, including her children, Debbie, Nancy and her husband Richard, Ralph, Bonnie and her husband William and Beth Anne and her husband John.
She was a cherished grandmother to 14 grandchildren, Jeremy (Beth), Meagan (Milek), Cody (Eva), Kaitlyn (Jeff), Spenser (Caitlin), Kendra (Kenny), Douglas (Allison), Hailey (Adam), Kelsey, Jake (Emily), Rebecca, Mackenzie (Byron), Olivia (James), and Emma.
A proud great-grandmother to 22 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Luke, Kevin, Sean, Isla, Grace, Isabella, Ana, Michael, Ben, Milo, Cole, Benjamin, Sloane, Louise, Charlie, Logan, Kylie, Amelia, Kensley, Camden and Reagan. Her family, a testament to her love and nurturing, will continue to honor her legacy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wilson Memorial Church or Stein Care, which provides comfort, care, and support to patients and their loved ones.
Barbara Ruth Barrett Diem's life was a beautiful quilt bound together with family and friends and backed with traditional values. She leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, collaboration, and a profound sense of community spirit. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
