Arthur George Onufer “George”  passed away peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2026, at his home in Watchung, New Jersey, surrounded by his family. He was 88 years old.

Born on May 22, 1937, in Passaic, New Jersey, George was the son of the late George and Anna Onufer. He was raised in Passaic and graduated from Passaic High School. Following high school, he furthered his education by attending classes at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He later resided in Clifton for 13 years before settling in Watchung in 1978, where he remained for the rest of his life.

George met his wife on a double date with some friends. What started as a double date quickly blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and the two were married April 25,1964 and built a life centered on love, family, and devotion That lasted more than 63 years.

He began his professional career working for his father-in-law at Union Container Corp., a textile packaging company located in Newark, New Jersey. Through dedication, hard work, and strong leadership, George rose through the ranks to become President of the company.

George proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserves for six years.

A man of deep faith, George was a devoted and longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Stony Hill Church in Watchung. His faith was an important and guiding presence throughout his life.

George cherished the time he spent with his family. He treasured their early years vacationing on Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire where the days were filled with boating and fishing on the lake. As his children grew older they purchased a house in Avalon and he spent the past 33 years vacationing down the Jersey shore with his children and grandchildren. 

He is survived by his beloved wife, Althea Onufer; his two children, Maureen Grieco and Geoffrey Onufer and his wife, Robin; his five cherished grandchildren, Matthew and his wife Nicole, Nicholas, Daniel, Jack, and Kyle; and his sister, Audrey and her husband Joseph Scarpa. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 12:00 PM at St. Mary’s Stony Hill Church, 225 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in George’s memory to the Heart Success Program at Morristown Medical Center, a program dedicated to supporting patients living with heart failure through specialized care, education, and ongoing treatment.
