Spencer Francis Sullivan Obituary

Spencer Francis Sullivan

Spencer Francis Sullivan passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at Autumn Lake Healthcare in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. He was 80 years old.

Spencer was born on October 14, 1945, in New York City, New York, to the late Charles D. and Ruth Ann Sullivan. He grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he graduated from high school. Following his high school years, Spencer went on to attend Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.

Spencer proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Stationed in Vietnam, he served as a Chief Warrant Officer, a role that reflected his discipline, courage, and commitment to duty. His military service was an important chapter in his life and helped shape the strength of character and quiet determination that he carried throughout the years.

Flying was Spencer’s true passion, and it became the foundation of a long and distinguished career. He dedicated his professional life to aviation and was proud to serve as a captain with American Airlines from 1987 until his retirement in 2005. Spencer was highly respected in his field and took great pride in the responsibility, precision, and professionalism that came with being a pilot. Even after retiring from American Airlines, his love of flying remained strong. Unable to step away from the skies, he continued his aviation career as a corporate pilot for many years.

Spencer moved to Plainfield, New Jersey, approximately 20 years ago, where he made his home and continued to enjoy the people and pursuits that brought meaning to his life. Outside of his career, Spencer had many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed inline skating and was an accomplished runner, completing multiple marathons throughout his life. His dedication to running reflected the same perseverance and focus that defined so many areas of his life.

Above all, Spencer will be remembered for his soft and gentle personality. He had a calm presence, a kind heart, and a quiet warmth that made those around him feel at ease. He lived a life marked by service, dedication, adventure, and love for his family.

Spencer is survived by his beloved wife, Natalie; his twin sons, Reid Sullivan and his wife, Ashley, and Adam Sullivan and their mother, Janice; his stepdaughter, Brittany Ferreira; his cherished grandson, Luke; and his four sisters, Joyce Murphy(Gordon ), Gail Bunnell (Steve), Liane Sutcliffe (Denny), and Ellin Sparrow. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
