Dr. Mohindar Singh Puar, 91, of Hillsborough, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at his home on July 8, 2026, with his loving wife by his side.

Dr. Puar was born on January 3, 1935, in Jalandhar, India. He lived in India until the age of 24, when he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to pursue his Ph.D. in Chemistry at Boston University. His commitment to education, discipline, and hard work shaped the course of his life and became the foundation for both his professional success and his personal mission to help others learn.

After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Puar began an impressive career as a chemist, first in Connecticut and then in New Jersey. He and his family later lived in East Windsor, Basking Ridge, and Bridgewater, where they resided for 22 years, before recently moving to Hillsborough. Dr. Puar worked in the Research and Development Department of Schering-Plough, which later became part of Bristol Myers Squibb, where he dedicated more than 35 years of service as a research chemist. He was respected for his intellect, professionalism, and lifelong dedication to scientific discovery.

A man of deep faith and community spirit, Dr. Puar was also one of the five founding members of the Garden State Sikh Association. Founded by several New Jersey Sikh families in 1973, the association became an important spiritual and cultural home for the Sikh community in New Jersey. Dr. Puar took great pride in helping establish a place where families could gather in faith, preserve their traditions, and build a strong sense of community for future generations.

While Dr. Puar took great pride in his career, one of his greatest passions was education. He believed deeply in the importance of learning and in making sure that others had access to proper educational opportunities. Following his retirement, he devoted much of his time to volunteering and teaching, both in the United States and in India. One of his favorite places to teach was Sant Baba Bhag Singh University in Village Khiala, Padhiana, District Jalandhar, Punjab, India, where he found great purpose in sharing his knowledge with students.

After the loss of his beloved son, Dr. Puar helped establish a scholarship in his son’s memory, the Dr. Sandeep Singh Puar Memorial Scholarship, which was started at Boston University. Through this scholarship and through his years of teaching and service, Dr. Puar’s commitment to education continues to honor his son’s legacy and benefit future generations.

Dr. Puar will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, scholar, teacher, and community leader. His life was one of accomplishment, service, faith, and quiet generosity. He leaves behind a legacy rooted in education, family, perseverance, and the belief that knowledge, faith, and community have the power to change lives.

He is survived by his loving wife, Surinder; his two daughters, Jasbir Kaur Puar and her husband, Jordi, and Kimpreet Kaur Puar; his grandson, Kirpal Singh Puar; and his four brothers, Randhir Singh Puar, Jujan Singh Puar, Gurmukh Singh Puar, and Diwan Singh Puar. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Dr. Sandeep Singh Puar.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, New Jersey. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by cremation at Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
