Obituary of Sidney George Piness, M.D.

Sidney George Piness, M.D., age 89, of Plainfield, died on Saturday, October 17th at Overlook Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Los Angeles, California to William Piness and Lee Piness, he graduated from North Plainfield High School in New Jersey and Williston Academy in East Hampton, Massachusetts. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland in 1941, he became an instructor in biology at University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. His medical career began upon graduating from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1945, after which he interned at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, New Jersey. During 1946-1948, he served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corp before proceeding to an Internal Medicine Residency at Boston City Hospital from 1948-1950, and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach, California from 1950-1951. In 1951, he returned to Plainfield where he established a private practice in Internal Medicine, retiring in 1997. During his career, he was a respected physician on the staff of Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, having professional affiliations with the Medical Society of New Jersey and the Union County Medical Society. He served as President of the Plainfield Area Medical Association, a member of the American Heart Association, president of the Union County Heart Association, and a member of the Plainfield Human Relations Committee. He was predeceased by his sister, Ethel Piness Abrams. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Carol Waldman Piness; his son, Andrew William Piness and his wife Joan Wenner Piness of Chatham; his daughter, Nancy Piness of Washington, DC; and his nephew, David Abrams of Washington, DC. Also surviving are his grandchildren, twins Kara Jennifer and Julia Morrison Piness. Cremation will be private. A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 West Eighth Street, Plainfield on Sunday, October 25 from 2-3 pm with a 3 pm Memorial Service.
