Obituary of James R. Spratley, Sr.

James R. Spratley, Sr., entered into eternal rest on November 29, 2009, at Overlook Hospital in Summit. He was born in Surry County, Virginia on August 6, 1940, to his parents John Lee and Pearl Clary Spratley. He was educated in the same county also. When he had grown into a young man he moved to Westfield in 1966, where he worked at CR Bard and Airco in Murray Hill. He also worked with the Special Police in Westfield. In later years he went to work for Phillip Morris until his retirement in 1997. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and a sister. He leaves to morn his passing his loving wife Mary E. Spratley of forty-two years, 8 children; Janice Jackson of Springs, Colorado, Sharon Spratley of Smithfield, Virginia, Brenda Spratley of Portsmouth, Virginia, Shelia and Jerome Birchette of Bacon Castle, Virginia, Angela and Joseph Carrington of Plainfield, Leslie and Dana Wilkerson of Plainfield, James R. Spratley, Jr. of New Brunswick and Rosanne Spratley of Plainfield, 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters Brenda Dixon, Judyann Stringfield and Nancy Winnikin; 4 brothers Lionel Spratley, Dwayne and Andrew Clary and Robert Lee Winnikin; 3 brother-in-laws Jackson William Tucker, Larry Tucker all reside in Alberta Virginia; Alvin Tucker of Plainfield; Deloris Russell of South Hill, Virginia; Vernell Tucker of Alberta, Virginia. A host of other relatives and friends. He was a member of the South Plainfield Congregation of Jehovah's Witness, 1123 Woodland Ave., Plainfield, NJ. His viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Friday, December 4th, at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 West 8th Street, Plainfield followed by a service at 10:00 am.
