Obituary of Edward Roosevelt Jones

Edward Roosevelt Jones, Sr., the oldest child of the late Lawrence and Helena Jones was born on September 15, 1927 in Syringa,Virginia. Edward or "Rosie" as many family members called him, attended school in Middlesex County Virginia . Being active in sports, he especially liked baseball. He along with some of his brothers played with the Tidewater Giants of the Negro league. While home Rosie and his brothers helped with the family farming after graduating from High School, Rosie served in the U.S. Army with the Corps of Engineers in the Philippines where he helped build bridges for his fellow soldiers. He attended school while there and studied business. Rosie was honorably discharged from the military after World War II. He came home and married his high school sweetheart Alberta Taylor on 12/25/50 , and from that union came four children, Carolyn, Jeanette, Ed Jr. and Cynthia. After a difficult time finding work in Virginia , Rosie and Alberta decided to move to Baltimore , Md. where they stayed with Alberta 's sister Sarah for a brief time before moving to Plainfield N.J. Rosie found work at a bearing company where he worked for 10+ years. While working there, he started working part-time and along with Alberta started there own business that became very successful and eventually expanded to Philadelphia where he partnered with some of his brothers. After Alberta passed in 2004 and his business slowing down Rosie decided to move to Jacksonville Fl. With his family by his side, Rosie slipped away peacefully to join Alberta on Friday, September 17, 2010 . He is survived by his four children; Carolyn, Jeanette (William), Edward Jr. (Latasha) and Cynthia. Five brothers; Jimmy (deceased), Wyatt, Richard, Paul and Ernest. Five sisters-in-law; Bernice, Louise, Mae, Silvia and Emma. Six Grandchildren; Tonya, Antonette (Crosby), Kristy (Cedrick), LaToya, Phillip and Taylor. Six Great-Grandchildren; Ashley, Jasmine, Michael Jr., Cedrick, Crosby Jr. and Tahjir, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
