Obituary of Charles Leonard Melillo

North Plainfield: Charles L. Melillo passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 10:30 p.m. at Greenbrook Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Plainfield on February 16, 1932 to the late Charles R. and Anna (D'Aiuto) Melillo. He lived in South Plainfield for 31 years and moved to North Plainfield in 1963. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in North Plainfield and was a 1950 graduate of North Plainfield High School. Mr. Melillo retired from the N.J. Department of Transportation in 1993 after 30 years of service as a construction supervisor. Prior to that he was employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad in South Plainfield for 10 years and operated Charlie's Atlantic Service in Scotch Plains for 3 years. He was a Korean War Veteran serving in the Army Engineers at West Point, NY, where he trained cadets in construction, explosives and demolition. One of his students was a cadet named H. Norman Schwarzkopf who later became the well-known General of Desert Storm. He previously served as a Lieutenant in the North Plainfield Auxiliary Police, President of St. Joseph School P.T.A. and was active in Boy Scout Troop 19 and Cub Scout Pack 19. He was a member of American Legion Post 1000, NJ Society of Asphalt Technologists, North Plainfield High School Alumni Association, NJ D.O.T. and C.W.A. Retirees Associations and friends of the N.J. Railroad and Transportation Heritage Center. He is survived by his wife, Ann (Cennamo) Melillo, his son, Michael and his wife Rose of Clark, N.J., his daughter, Annette Melillo of North Plainfield and his grandchildren, Sarah Marie and Michael Charles Melillo. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 9:00 at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd, Watchung, followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Resurrection at St. Joseph's Church, North Plainfield. Cremation will be private. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Processing Center, 6725 Lyons St., PO Box 7, East Syracuse, NY 13057.
