Obituary of Ruth A. Davis

Ruth Ann Davis was born on May 11, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of the late Bell and Magnolia Shaw. She was the second of five children. Baptized at an early age, she continued her Christian beliefs throughout her life. Ruth was a member of the graduating class of Paul Lawrence Dunbar Vocational High School in 1967. She was part of the National Honor Society as well as the Distributive Education Program. She played the trumpet in the school band and she was an office aid. She married the love of her life Joseph "JoeD" Davis in 1970 and from the union 2 daughters were born, Natasha and Lesley. Ruth spent most of her life in Plainfield, NJ and was actively involved in the Plainfield Public School system while her children attended school. She was also a Girl Scout Troop Leader and an active PTA member. Ruth also, was the Block Captain of the Ironbound Avenue Block Association. Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was affectionately called "Gooma". She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and neighbors. She loved to barbeque all year around and everyone loved Mama Davis' chicken and ribs. Ruth loved stamps and was an avid stamp collector. She loved taking pictures and was a wonderful photographer. She kept herself apprised of the newest and latest updates related to photography. Ruth loved music, especially The Big Bands. She was a people person and a colorful conversationalist. She made friends easily with her witty smile and helpful spirit. She was very loyal, trusting and caring individual. She was a good listener and for that reason she was a mother to so many. Ruth entered into eternal rest at the age of 61 on Monday, March 21, 2011 at JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ after a brief and sudden illness. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Earline Woods. She leaves to cherish in her memory, husband Joseph Davis of Plainfield, NJ; daughters Lesley Davis of Plainfield, NJ and Natasha Davis-DeBose and her husband Stephen of Washington, DC; two grandchildren, Ella and Evan DeBose; sisters Barbara Jean Hough of Chicago, Illinois and sister Irma Jean Thompson of Marianna, Arkansas; brother Bell Shaw Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
