Obituary of Maurice Meyers, MD

Watchung: Maurice Meyers, MD, age 85, died Friday, May 6, 2011 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NY. Born and raised in Plainfield, Dr. Meyers moved his family to Watchung in 1966. Dr. Meyers received his Bachelors Degree from NYU in 1948 and his doctorate from NJ College of Medicine - Charter Class in 1964. Prior to retiring 15 years ago, he worked as an attending physician at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield for over forty years. Dr. Meyers served his country honorably during World War II in the Third Infantry Division, part of the Seventh Army. For his service to his country, Dr. Meyers was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, European, African , Middle Eastern Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. Dr. Meyers was recently awarded the Insignia of the Legion of Honor, France's highest honor. Dr. Meyers received the medal for his contributions to the liberation of France during World War II. It was presented to him at an official ceremony on Veterans Day at the Lycee Francais de New York in 2010. This year, his two greatest accomplishments were fulfilled, the publishing of a book titled "Reflections on My War" a memoir and the Bar Mitzvah of his only grandson, Gabriel William Nathanson. Dr. Meyers had been a member of the Plainfield Masonic Lodge. One of his greatest joys was being a member of the Watchung Writers Group who met every Thursday at the public library. He was predeceased by his daughter, Mindy Meyers in 1992 He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Knauer Meyers; a son, Marc Meyers and his wife, Feroza of Berkeley Heights; a daughter, Charna Meyers and her husband Roy Nathanson of Brooklyn, NY and one grandson, Gabriel William Nathanson. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung NJ with Rabbi Moshe Samber officiating. Interment with Military Honors to follow at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.
