John Wright

Obituary of John Andrew Wright

John Andrew Wright, aged 67, a beacon of serenity and selflessness, passed away embraced by the love of his family at Lenox Hill Hospital on Monday, April 1, 2024, in New York City. Born on June 3, 1956, in New York City to Herbert H. Wright and Margaret Coates, John grew up in the vibrant Corona neighborhood of Queens, imbuing his spirit with the city's rich tapestry of life.

Before embarking on his academic and professional journey, John dedicated himself to global understanding and peace, serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines from 1977 to 1979. This experience profoundly influenced his worldview and commitment to service.

Throughout his life, John developed a profound bond with his stepmother, Elfreda Wright, who became a second mother to him and a cherished grandmother to his children. Her influence and love played a significant role in shaping the man he became.

After moving to North Miami Beach in 1983, John began his impactful career at a local guidance center, dedicating himself to the community's well-being before returning to New York City in 1987, where he resided until his passing.

John's academic journey led him to Syracuse University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in social work, followed by a master's degree in the same field from Columbia University, specializing in counseling and psychotherapy. His commitment to helping others continued as he joined the New York City Board of Education as a social worker in 1987, and also served at the Fountain House, assisting those struggling with mental illness.

Renowned for his tranquil and benevolent nature, John's presence was a haven of calm, often sought after by loved ones during tumultuous times. His simplicity and harmony with the natural world were evident in his love for the outdoors, leading camping expeditions with both his and extended family's children, creating cherished memories.

John's soul resonated with the rhythms of music, finding joy in strumming his guitar. A true son of Queens, he cherished moments at Coney Island and supported the Nets, Jets, and Mets with a resilient spirit.

John's legacy of kindness and serenity endures through his beloved wife of 43 years, Nanette, his children, John Herbert Wright and Corinne Wright-Reilly (and her husband, Eric), and his treasured granddaughter, Martine.

Family, friends, and those touched by John's gentle spirit are invited to honor his life on Friday, from 5 to 9 pm at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069.
