Obituary of Samuel Liebowitz
Samuel Liebowitz, 86, died on Friday, December 17, 2004 at his residence in Somerset. He was born in New York City and had recently moved to Somerset after living in Jackson from1959-2001 and in Watchung from 2001-2004.
Mr. Liebowitz served as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. During his 5 year tour of duty, he taught airplane mechanics while stationed in Illinois and Mississippi.
Prior to his retirement, he was a Postal Clerk in the city of Lakewood for over 20 years. He and his wife, Pauline also owned Axels Homemade Candy in Lakewood which earned him the nickname, The Candy Man.
For many years, he was a member of the Golden City Lodge of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization. Since his retirement, Mr. Liebowitz had been a life member of the Toms River Chapter of NaAmat which is an organization that supports vocational and training programs for women and children in Israel and the Jewish Social Club of Toms River.
He is predeceased by his wife, Pauline Meyerson Liebowitz in 2002.
Surviving are his daughters, Adele Calo and her husband Seraphin of Cortlandt, NY, Elaine Margaretta and her husband John of Freehold and Ronnie Liebowitz and her husband Robert Raymar of Watchung; his grandchildren, Danielle Calo, Adriana Calo, Janel Schwartz and her husband Jason, Meryl Raymar and Aaron Raymar, and a great-granddaughter, Perri Hannah Schwartz. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, December 19th at 12:30 p.m. in the Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung with Rabbi Joel Abraham officiating. Interment will immediately follow at the Floral Park Cemetery, Monmouth Junction. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to NaAmat, 61-A Hedge Drive, Lakewood, NJ 08701.
