Carl was an amazing person. I fist met him and Joanne at their wedding event at Schooley's Mountain. Ursala, who I bearly knew, dragged to me to this thing called the SCA and this event. I ended up being the tail end of a dragon for a skit for Fin Mac Cool. I have been their freinds now for 20 years or so. Carl was always their for us, the younger crowd at the time. He kept us is line, introduced us to the coolest stuff and lent an ear when asked with no judgement was offered but many tiimes you would see a side of an argument that you never saw or considered. He was a great friend. I regret that I have not ssen him and Joanne very often in the past years. He will be sorely missed and words can not express his loss. My prayers go out to Joanne, Lydia and all of their family.

I met Carl at the first major DVC-MG event that I attended. He was the first to greet me. His 'hello!' and big smile made me feel like we had been friends for years. Ever since, I looked for him and his smile at all our events. I will miss you, my friend.

I have so many great memories of Carl. Two of the things I will miss most is playing beside him on the softball field or ice hockey rink, then reminiscing about the game afterwards over a beer or two. Then there was also that everpresent, infectious laugh and grin that he was quick to display. Actually, there are many things about him that I will miss that there isn't room for here. The overriding theme that is apparent when hearing so many other people talking about him is how many people he touched in such a positive way and how powerful was (and always will be) his aura.

Many is the night I remember, for years back, going to Irik and Merlynia's for officer meetings, for parties, or just to hang out. Irik stepped in at the last minute at my wedding to be a reader, and always volunteered to be an Obstacle at Quest. The first one Alyce and I wrote, he was the keystone final obstacle - it was The Baron's New Clothes, after all. Then next year, for the Quest of the 4 Magical Items of the Tuatha de Danaan, he helped me design and make the ogham sticks and decoder block that were the key to the whole quest, again.
Irik never tired of talking about cooking with my late wife and I, and we often tried out recipes, equipment (like my camp oven), and such together. He cooked up a storm at every chance he got.
Whenever I think of a great SCA event, I see him in my mind's eye, in that red tunic, big chef's knife in hand, tying up a whole loin of pork and stabbing it with the knife and stuffing in garlic cloves. Smiling and having a beer while he worked.
My heartfelt condolences to Merlynia, Lydia, and the rest of the family. I hope I'll always be there to help Merlynia, just as she and Irik were always there for me.

Carl was such a nice guy - our neighbor for over 16 years in Maplewood. He helped us many times blowing snow from our sidewalk and was just fun to talk to. We won't forget him and his friendly smile. Joanne, you are in our thoughts and prayers. You know he and Anna are having a beer together!!!

Joann/Merlynia:
My heartfelt sympathy is with you during this time of grieving. The Baron will always be remembered with great warmth and love for his keen wit, charming sweetness, and his ability to enable people to be better then they think. He'll also be remebered, of course, for his love of beer and The Swamp.
May he rest in peace....wherever he may be. Love to All.

Cattle Die; Kinsmen Die
One day you will die too.
The one thing that never dies
is a man's fair won reputation.
...And what a great reputation Carl has. I've had the great fortune of his friendship for nearly 20 years.
There are too many stories to tell. All my time spent with Carl have been joyful...and only this time brings sadness. His life has touched many in such lasting ways that he will never be forgotten.

Remembering when I worked in the store around the corner and you walked in and we both stared at each other for a few minutes and said "SCA, right?"
After that you stopped in and always made sure to stop and talk. This little bit of time was a godsend. Your few minutes of friendship each time came at the lowest part of my life, when I was divorced and alone. You talked to me about everything and reminded me that my other family (SCA) was out there and still cared. Your prodding made me go out and start making a new life again.
Sometimes little things mean so much.
Carl, I never said thank you.
You did make a difference.

I just knew you for a year and a half, but you were a wonderful co-worker, great friend and will always remember the laughs and good times we shared with you. The last conversation we had together you were an inspiration (quitting smoking), and for you and in your memory, Carl....I will accomplish that goal that you tried to help me with.
We love you, Carl and will never forget you. You are a shining star upon us!!

As we age, memories of "the good ol days" occasionaly enter our minds ... childhood, high school, college etc.
At our 30 year reunion I enjoyed sharing time with Carl ... again. A class act indeed.
Most people know what the golden rule is. Carl Finne, from my viewpoint ALWAYS treated others as he wished to be treated.
A true class act.

Carl, I hope you knew how much you were admired and appreciated. I will always count myself lucky to have known you. To have enjoyed your company, your humor and your generosity. To have benefited from your knowledge and encouragement. To have known someone who shared a curiosity and excitement about many of the same things I did. What a marvelous person you were.

This isn't how it was supposed to be. Carl was younger than I, and yet always seemed to be the older of us. The man had gravitas in spades, and generosity to match. I always thought I'd be able to find him there (wherever that might happen to be), with a smile and a joke.
And probably a beer for the thirsty traveller.
Uff da.
The warm man, the bearer of burdens and solver of problems, friend, husband, referee, ring-giver and salt of the earth is dead; we are left with only the echo of his life in us.
God, this hurts.

Carl was a great man. He excelled at everything he did, and made a difference in the lives he touched.
He got involved. He cared. I'll miss his humor, his creativity, his wit, his kindness, the way he always seemed to know what to say or do to make things better for those around him.
Carl had a great capacity to love, and was much loved in return.
Carl was always there for me. He was always there for everyone.

Carl was a big bundle of light and caring and life. Whatever name or affiliation you knew him from I feel everyone was attracted to the energy and sincere warmth he gave off. What times were spent in his company were always good ones and we looked forward to being able to spend much more with him. Unfortunately, now we will only be able to draw on the lovely memories of an enhanting man. Wherever his essence drifts or coalesces in the universe it will be a bright spot, maybe even a star of its own.

'Baron Erik' and his wife were two of the first to make me feel at home in the Society for Creative Anachronism, now my second family.
I hope all reading this will understand what a great gift that is - being made to know there is a whole bunch of people who do more than share your hobby, but care about you as well.
I am sorry it is too late to return the favor beyond honoring his memory.

Carl was my "neighbor" in our office at Reckson when I worked there a year and a half ago. We shared so many stories, pictures, and laughs. Carl's laugh was infectious and could be heard throughout the entire office.
There are a handful of people that you meet in life that are real, genuine good people and Carl Finne was one of them.
