Obituary of John M. Matejek

John Michael Matejek, age 87, died on Monday, March 14, 2005 at his residence in Plainfield. He was born in Norwich, CT and had lived in Plainfield since 1956 after having lived in Dunellen and Newark. Mr. Matejek was a Design Engineer for the American Can Company in Fairlawn, NJ for over 32 years. He served in the Army and the Merchant Marines during World War II. Mr. Matejek was a doubles handball champion in NYC having been undefeated for 3 straight years. He played third base for a semi pro baseball league in Pennington. Mr. Matejek enjoyed sports and coached Little League for 8 years. He loved to draw and paint. Mr. Matejek was a gifted mechanic doing all of the repairwork for his home and his automobiles. He is predeceased by his sisters, Mary Matejek, Henrietta Rutkiewicz and Betty Kessler. Mr. Matejek is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Wavrinuk Matejek; his sons, John James Matejek and Michael Matthew Matejek and his wife Diane; his brother, Walter Matejek and his sisters, Mildred Geruc and Irene Terrezza. Also surviving are his 5 grandchildren, Megan, Michael, Jimmy, Robert and Brian. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March, 19th at 8:00 am at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 West 8th Street, Plainfield followed by a 9:30 am Funeral Mass at Mary, Mother of God Church in Hillsborough. Visitation will be on Thursday from 7-9 and Friday from 2-4 pm only.
