Obituary of Henry Edward “Edward” Gabler

H. Edward Gabler, 93, died Saturday, September 17, 2005 at the Harborside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bridgewater. He was elected to the North Plainfield Borough Council in 1955 and became the first Democrat every re-elected to the Council in 1958. During the 1950s he was a candidate for several offices: Presidential Elector for Adlai Stevenson in 1956, Somerset County Freeholder in 1957 and North Plainfield Mayor in 1959. He served on the Somerset County Tax Board from 1962 to 1976 and on the County Vocational Technical High School Board of Education for several terms. Born August 10, 1912 in Norwich New York, the third son of Henry E. and Lena Sharron Gabler. He served in the Citizens Military Training Camp at Camp Dix in 1930 and was a 1931 graduate of Norwich High School. In 1935 he graduated Clarkson College with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree cum laude. He taught at the Rice Institute in Houston, Texas before becoming a chemical engineer for National Starch in 1936. He retired from National Starch in 1975. He lived in North Plainfield since 1939. He was a member of the Saint Josephs Holy Name Society and Past Exalted Ruler of Lodge 885 B.P.O.E. His eldest grand-daughter Anne-Marie Henn predeceased him in 1982. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Jane Margaret Tiquin; four children, Katherine A. Henn of Denville, Henry Edward Gabler III of Princeton, Margaret E. King of Richmond, Virginia and Mary T. Dennis of South Plainfield as well as 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Monday, September 19th from 2-4 & 7-9 in the Higgins Home for Funerals, 461 Somerset Street, North Plainfield. The funeral mass and burial will be held at St. Pauls R.C. Church and Cemetery in Norwich, New York. Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad Street, Norwich, NY 13815. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, 400 Morris Avenue, Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834-1365.
