Obituary of Richard Patrick O´Connell
Richard Patrick OConnell, age 82, died on Thursday, October 6, 2005 at his residence in Stirling. He was born and raised in Newark and had lived in Bloomfield for 45 years before moving to Stirling 10 years ago. Mr. OConnell served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Prior to his retirement in 1995, he was a letter carrier for 36 years, staring his career in Bloomfield. As a letter carrier, he became active with the National Association of Letter Carriers. He served as the Secretary Treasurer for the NALC for 14 years. He was also a member of the DC Friends of Ireland. Mr. OConnell was a member of the Father Owens Memorial Post 1187 of the Catholic War Veterans in Newark and a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul church in Stirling. He loved sports, especially the NJ Devils and Notre Dame football team. He also enjoyed traveling. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Eleanor Doris Loughren OConnell; his daughters, Kathleen OConnell-Heffernan of Warren, Doris Ann Nigro of Gillette; his sons, Richard P. OConnell Jr. of Landing, William OConnell of Farmington, NH, Charles OConnell, of Barnegat, Kevin OConnell of Clifton and Timothy OConnell of Bloomfield; his sister, Sr. Kathleen Margaret OConnell, O.P. of Caldwell and he is predeceased by 2 brothers and 2 sisters. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 10, 2005 at 9:00 am at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung followed by a 10:00 am funeral mass at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Stirling. Interment will be at St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3-9 pm. Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Church, Bebout Ave. Stirling, NJ 07980.
