Obituary of Edward John Kredatus

Edward John Kredatus, age 84, the retired Chief of Police of Clifton, NJ died on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at Berkeley Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berkeley Heights. He was born in Clifton and had lived there before moving to Basking Ridge and then to Warren. Mr. Kredatus was a World War II Veteran having been on active duty in the United States Navy from 1942 to December 1945. He served on the escort carrier USS Mission Bay and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After the war, he joined the Clifton Police Department, rising through the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain. He was the Departments Weapons Training Officer and headed its Pistol Team, achieving a perfect score in Departmental competition. He was promoted to Chief of Police in 1978, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Kredatus was a graduate of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He was a longtime communicant of St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church in Clifton. He recently became a parishioner of St. Marys Stony Hill Church in Watchung. He was a member of the Clifton Police Benevolent Association, Local 36, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the NJ State Association of Chiefs of Police and the Knights of Columbus. He traveled extensively throughout the United States and enjoyed a summer home in Seaside Park, NJ. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elsie Melo Kredatus; his daughter, Mary Anne Cronheim and her husband Daniel of Watchung; his son, Eugene Kredatus and his wife, Jayne of Bridgewater and his four grandchildren, David and Robert Cronheim and Brian and Megan Kredatus. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 30th at 9:00 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung followed by a 10:00 a.m. funeral mass at St. Marys Stony Hill Church in Watchung. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Paterson. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 2-4 & 7-9.
