Obituary of Olaf Walter Jelmert

Olaf Walter Jelmert, 66, a kind and devoted husband, father and grandfather, unexpectedly passed away Sunday (Feb. 26, 2006) at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. He was born May 30, 1939 in Plainfield. He was the son of Ole and Anna Jelmert. He grew up in Watchung with his two sisters that he leaves behind, Vivian Simms of Montana and Judith Long of Massachusetts. He is survived by his mother Anna Jelmert, his wife Renate and his four sons, Erik, Trevor, Byron and Randal. He attended Wagner College and graduated from Rutgers University. He worked for 33 years at Egan Machinery in Somerville as an accountant. He retired four years ago to enrich his life with the thing that mattered to him most, his family. Walter loved to spend time with his four sons, Erik, Trevor, Byron and Randal and his nine grandchildren. His favorite pastime included passing down traditions and family values to his loving family. He spent endless hours babysitting and reading to his grandchildren who adored his gentle and patient nature. He gave of his time so freely, helping his sons and their families build their homes and enrich each of their lives with his precise handywork. Most of all, his life revolved around his true love, Renate. Spending time was simple and pure. They enjoyed watching the birds, going to the movies and talking over coffee. Whatever they were doing they always appreciated every moment they had together. Even up until his final moments he was surrounded by family. His final anticipation was the family Sunday dinner, which was so lovingly prepared by his mother-in-law, Lieselotte. He will be missed and loved and most of all never forgotten. We truly have an angel watching over us. A viewing will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2006 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung. The funeral will be on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by interment at Springdale Methodist Church Cemetery inWarren.
