Obituary of Stewart W. Smith
Stewart W. Smith, age 92, died on Sunday June 18, 2006 at Care One at Madison Ave. in Morristown NJ. Mr. Smith was born in Brooklyn NY and had grown up in Plainfield. He resided in North Plainfield NJ and in Florida before moving to Berkeley Heights in 1981. Prior to retiring in 1978, Mr. Smith worked for the Courier News as an Editor for 46 years, during which he only took one sick day. Mr. Smith was a Veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army. During his five years of service, he was in charge of public relations at Parachute School and Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA., and later was on a three-man team which started the China Theater edition of Stars and Stripes in Shanghai. Mr. Smith had a real vocation for golf and had multiple holes in one. He was an excellent billiards player and bowler. Mr. Smith was a long time member and past secretary of the Plainfield Lodge 885, BPO Elks; a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and a member of the Old Guard of Summit He is predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Smith in 2002. Surviving are two sons Robert Smith and his wife Sharon of Randolph NJ, Donald Smith and his wife Diane of Littleton CO; a daughter Joan Murphy and her husband Doug of Berkeley Heights NJ; a brother Raymond Smith of Jacksonville FL; six grandchildren Kristine, Sheryl, Jilleen, Zachary, Ryan, and Joseph. Also surviving is three great grandchild Nicole, Elizabeth and Kyle. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday June 22, 2006 at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung NJ 07069. Interment to follow will be at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains NJ. Visiting will be on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the funeral home.
