Obituary of Walter H. Berger

Piscataway: Walter Berger, age 90, died on Monday, October 2, 2006 at Saint Peters University Hospital in New Brunswick . Mr. Berger was born in Pittsburgh, raised in Newark and eventually settled with his family in Plainfield. He moved to Rossmoor in Jamesburg in 1972 and for the past 3 years lived at the Francis Parker Memorial Home in Piscataway. He graduated from Westside High School in Newark and from Rutgers College receiving his degree in 1938. He was a former president of the Alumni Association of Rutgers. A member of the Henry Rutgers Society, he also served as a trustee of the Rutgers Alumni Faculty Club until his death. Mr. Berger received the Emeritus Award and was elected a Loyal Son of Rutgers. He was a long time Rutgers football season ticket holder and had attended all three home games this season. He also followed Rutgers tennis and basketball. He was an avid tennis player, who was nicknamed Spinny because he could put very effective spins on the ball. Walter served in the Army Signal Corps during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley Berger in 1998. Mr. Berger is survived by his son Dr. Alan E. Berger of Silver Spring, MD and his daughter Ridgley J. Berger of Highlands, NC. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 4th at 11:00 at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung. Interment will follow at Oheb Sholom Cemetery, Hillside, NJ. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in his name to: The Rutgers University Foundation designated to Scarlet R Club; 7 College Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901-1262 or to the American Heart Association; 2550 US Highway One, North Brunswick, 08902-4301.
