Although I had not dealt with Bill in years, since I moved out of Purchasing for Alfa Aesar into General Management in 2001, I was saddened to hear of his passing. He had always been a kind and pleasant man who, despite his vast knowledge of the products he sold, was always helpful and never condescending. It was a pleasure to deal with Bill Bonner.
When Bill's passing was announced at a recent Staff Meeting here in Massachusetts, a number of people were heard to make comments ranging from sadness to admiration. I think I can speak for all of us who dealt with Bill on a professional level by saying he will be sorely missed.
You have our sympathy and well wishes at this difficult time,
Your Friends at Alfa Aesar
Sincerely,
Barry Singelais

I am so sorry to hear about Bill’s passing. I, like so many others, was fortunate to be touched by Bill’s special gift for making people feel welcome when I first started attending ACCG meetings. I admired Bill’s warmth, his dedication, his unassuming nature and his thorough enjoyment of life. ACCG meetings will not be the same without Bill’s exuberant presence.

My thoughts are going mainly to you, Arlene and Lori, but also to all your family. I was in France and just received the sad news upon my return. There is no word that can express the sadness I feel. I will always remember my last phone call to Bill just a few months ago. I couldn't imagine I will not talk with him again. Bill was a friend of the whole crystal growth community. His presence and impact on the Crystal Growth Association was invaluable. Bill will never be replaced and will be missed by all of us. Our conferences will never be the same without Bill's pool party. Arlene, Lori and your family you have been blessed to live with a wonderful, thoughtful and caring person. I wish you to have all the strengths and courage to recover from this loss and hope that you always keep good memories of Bill as I will.

I first met Bill in 1991 at the Gordon Conference on Crystal Growth. Bill was always upbeat, willing to help newcomers learn the craft of crystal growth, and promoted the field with enthusiasm and good will. He reminded me to always enjoy what you do for work - you need to get satisfaction from the time you spend, and he certainly did. I did not get to work with him anywhere near as much as I wished. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Arlene and Family,
It was in the early 1970s that I met Bill and through the years I came to know him not only as a colleague but also as a friend. In the fisrt days of the GaAs conferences and later the annual InP conferences, it became standard practice, and Bill was always at the center, we would listen to the crystal growth presentations during the day and in the evenings retire to the local bar trying to make sense of what was said.
Bill had the keen eye to differentiate high theory jargon from the real parameters needed to be controlled to get the crystals come out of the melt.
His untimely passsing is indeed a great loss.
I extend my sincere condolences to you and your family.

I am very sorry for your (& our) loss. I just started to have the pleasure of knowing your dad. It seems I just spoke with him a short time ago...
I must say I was honored that your dad asked me to help him with the upcoming conference. During a recent phone call with him, he taught me something rather important in just one sentence...I could only imagine having how good it would be years to learn from him.
We managed to have some rather good times together, especially in Keystone.
I'm certain he is with us in some way.
God Bless,

Dear Arlene and Family-You were so blessed to have had such a wonderful man as your husband and father. I have known Bill for many years through the AACG and his interactions with Laser Diode. He was a warm-spirited man who always made you feel special. He treated everyone with respect. He was so funny and FUN to be with-even when he was singing! My memories of him include hot tub parties with mudslides during the AACG conventions-even if it was freezing. (Arlene-I am sure you remember these occasions!)He was serious about his work and was very talented while remaining humble and happy. He truly loved you all. It was always obvious. I was so VERY sorry to hear of his passing. God bless you and help you to find comfort in so many wonderful memories.

I would like to convey my sincere thoughts and deepest sympathies to the Bonner family.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bill at an AACG gathering quite a few years back and had often spoken to him at these affairs. Our paths have crossed many times during my career in optics and crystals, as we all tend to "travel" in the same circles. His sense of humor and wit always brightened the occasion.
Bill was a nice guy to know and talk to and he will be sorely missed. Our AACG gatherings will never quite be the same without him.
My prayers go out to the Bonner family and to Bill.

Dear Arlene:
I was very saddened to hear about Bill’s sudden passing. It was just a few weeks ago that we had an opportunity to speak during the Christmas party at Jasna Polana. I have known Bill professionally for many years from his work with the American Association of Crystal Growth and our interaction on scientific programs together. I have always been a great admirer of his many talents and the enthusiasm and passion he displayed in his work. I also enjoyed his wonderful sense of humor and wit, when making a point about a particular topic to an associate or colleague.
He will be greatly missed by all his friends and colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My heartfelt sympathies to the family of Bill Bonner. Having known Bill since my grad school days, he was a resource for his technical insights in bulk crystal growth. Words aren't enough to express our sympathy to Aunt Arlene, Lori, and Sandy. I will share two of my earliest memories of Uncle Bill. The first was working with him in the garden, which I remember he was very passionate about. I've been trying to figure out when that might have been and I suspect it was when my parents went on a trip, and I stayed with Aunt Arlene, Uncle Bill, Lori and Sandy (I was probably only 5 or 6 years old then). I also distinctly remember a freezing cold Christmas when my dad's old Plymouth Duster wouldn't start for us to go home. Uncle Bill went out to help my dad for a while in the freezing weather. Many years later, my husband Bob met my uncle. Bob always enjoyed chatting with him. I know that when our son Chase is older, we will be able to share many stories about my Uncle with him.

In the 1970's, Commercial Crystal Labs had been doing some crystal growth work for Van Uitert of Bell Labs and during one of my visits there, I had the pleasure of meeting Bill.
By 1986 I had moved my lab to Florida but I still had a good deal of contact with Bill over the years both by telephone and also at meetings and conferences.
After Bill retired and started Crystallod, we helped each other in the crystal business whenever we could. I very much enjoyed our conversations and his friendship over the years.
I will miss his leadership, his spirit and his contagious excitement for our vocation of crystal growing.

I first met Bill in 1964 while I was at Airtron and Bill was with Bell Labs. Over the years we became good friends while attending AACG, Gordon, II-VI etc Conferences. Bill was a most personable fellow with everyone. He was a really great guy who liked to have a lot of fun. His evermore quote would be "are we having fun yet". The other side of Bill was serious, a good scientist and an excellent crystal grower whose contributions to the field have been noteworthy. Over the years our wives, Arlene and Madlyn, attended some of the same conferences and our bonds became closer.
In February of 1987 Bill and I met in LAX and drove together to the Gordon Conference in Santa Barbara. Little did I realize at the time I would be moving there in November. After the conference Bill and I flew to Las Vegas for the weekend. We did Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and other natural spots by day and the nightclubs and casinos by night. What a blast we had!!!
A year later Bill (now President of AACG) asked Tony Gentile and I to co-chair the Local Arrangements Committee for ICCG-10. Bill and Joe Wenckus were conference co-chairs. While a lot of work, it was also fun working closely with Bill to accomplish a very successful international conference. Madlyn and Arlene worked together on the committee hosting the spouses.
Late in the 90's while.Madlyn and I were touring the country in our RV (I had retire in"94) we stopped in Warren and spent a weekend with Bill and Arlene. It was the last time we saw Bill.
About a week before Christmas, Bill and I spoke on the telephone. We talked about his cancer and chemo treatments. We planned that after the treatments we would meet in Las Vegas for another weekend "toot". Right now it is on hold till we meet again.
Our deepest sympathies and prayers are for Arlene and her family in this time of great sorrow. Bill was a wonderful husband, father and friend. We will all miss him.

Bill was a truly good man, a great friend and in spite of his irascible ways, I don't think he had an enemy in the world. Everyone who met him, remembered him. I may be mixing a couple of stories, but as I remember it, he was in London on the way to the York ICCG and stayed at the Hotel Russell. They had no Jack Daniels in the bar and he gave them a very stern talking to, which resulted in a bottle being present the next night. Some years later he returned to the Hotel Russell. On seeing him enter, the bartender said, "Good evening Mr. Bonner." and reached for the bottle of Jack Daniels. If there is none in heaven, I don't think Bill will stay.
