Obituary of Sr. Mary Evangelist Smith, R.S.
Sister Mary Evangelist Smith, 88, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, NJ. Sister Evangelist was born in Philadelphia, PA. At an early age she moved with her family to Atlantic City, NJ where she lived until she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1940. She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish. Sister Evangelist received a BS degree in Business Administration from Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ. She taught in Saint James School in Red Bank and Red Bank Catholic High School. She also taught in Cathedral High School, Trenton and Saint Mary High School, Perth Amboy, NJ. After thirty-five years of teaching she continued to minister in the name of mercy at McAuley Hall and Saint James Convent. She retired to McAuley Hall in 2001. She is survived by her brother Joseph Smith of Absecon, her grand niece Janet Gaeta Stiteler and her husband Michael and their daughter Ava Marie of Atlantic City and the Reale Families of Somers Point and Ventnor Heights, NJ. Visitation will take place at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ on Friday, January 12, 2007 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at Saint Catherine of Siena Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial immediately following Mass will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ.
