Obituary of Mary Valerian Kelty
Sister Mary Valerian Kelty, Sister of Mercy.
Sister Mary Valerian was born in Trenton, NJ, one of five children of John and Madeline (Evans) Kelty. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Elementary School and Cathedral High School, both in Trenton, NJ. Sister Valerian earned her BA in Mathematics from Georgian Court College, Lakewood, NJ and her MA in Secondary Education from Villanova University, Philadelphia, PA.
Cecilia Kelty entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1940, received her habit and name (Sister Mary Valerian) in 1941, and was perpetually professed as a Sister of Mercy in 1946.
Ministering as teacher in the Trenton, Camden and Metuchen Dioceses was her joy. She served her students and their families at St. Paul's School, Princeton, St. John's School, Lambertville, Red Bank Catholic HS, Camden Catholic HS, St. Nicholas School, Atlantic City, St. Mary's HS, South Amboy, St. Mary's HS, Perth Amboy, Notre Dame HS, Lawrenceville, Phillipsburg Catholic HS, and Holy Spirit HS, Absecon. In retirement she extended her mission as volunteer to Mount Saint Mary Academy, Mount Saint Mary House of Prayer, the Regional Community of New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy.
Sister Valerian is survived by her sister Eileen Harney of Trenton, NJ, Thomas Kelty of New York and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews
Visitation will take place at McAuley hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ on Wednesday, August 29, 2012. The Wake will be from 10 AM to 11 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM.
Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ.
