Obituary of Laura S. Kinney

Bennington, VT Laura Kinney, entered into eternal rest on January 31, 2008, one day shy of her 93rd birthday the at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, Bennington, VT. Laura was born in Plainfield , NJ , on February 1, 1915, the daughter of William and Julia (Ennis) Summers. She married Earl G. (Jake) Kinney on April 4, 1942. Mrs. Kinney graduated from St Marys Catholic School and Plainfield High School . She obtained her bachelors degree in English and French from Montclair State College, and a Special Education masters degree from Rutgers University . While teaching in Plainfield she served as a student and teacher advocate on various committees. Even after she retired, she remained interested in Plainfield city and school affairs and attended meetings as long as her health permitted. During World War II, Lauras husband Jake enlisted in the U.S. Navy and she assumed his position in the Plainfield School System as Attendance Officer and School Social Worker until his return. When she resumed teaching later in life, she served the students in the special education program at Lincoln and Barlow Schools Laura was an active parishioner of St. Marys Roman Catholic Church in Plainfield , NJ . Laura particularly wanted to express her gratitude to her students and their families as well as to those teachers and administrators who worked with her to enhance public school education in Plainfield . Laura is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law; Dr. Richard S. Kinney and Mary Lou of Boise, Idaho, and Thomas P. Kinney and Kathleen C. of San Diego, California, and two daughters and sons-in-law; Kathleen and James Mariucci of Wildwood, Florida, and Patricia and Richard Dailey of Bennington, Vermont, 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and her loving friends both in Plainfield and Vermont. She is predeceased by her father and mother, William and Julia summers, husband, Earl Jake G. Kinney of Plainfield , NJ , and sister-in-law, Katherine Kinney, of Flemington , NJ . Laura and her family thank the people who cared for and befriended her at the Centers for Rehabilitation in Bennington , Vermont. Mrs. Kinneys family will be in attendance at the Higgins Home for Funerals, at 209 W. 8th St., Plainfield, NJ 07060, at 9:00 AM to 10:30AM on Monday, February 4, followed by liturgy at St. Marys Roman Catholic Church at Liberty Street and 6th in Plainfield 11:00 AM. Internment will follow at St. Gertrudes Cemetery in Colonia , NJ . In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Lauras memory made to St. Marys Roman Catholic Church, Plainfield , NJ . or to a favorite charity of your personal preference.
