Obituary of Thelma O. Lambert

Thelma O. Lambert, daughter of the late Harry J. Lambert, Sr. and Olive Penniston Lambert, was born in Union, NJ on August 3, 1922. She departed this life on March 30, 2008. She attended Jefferson Grammar School in Union, and completed her secondary education in Plainfield public schools. She graduated from Plainfield High School in 1939. Following her graduation she enrolled in the Harlem Hospital School for Nurses Training and graduated in 1944 as a Registered Nurse. Following her graduation from Nursing School she enlisted in the Army Nurses Corp. She enlisted with the rank of 2nd Lt. and thus began her three-year tour of duty at Fort Huachuca in Arizona. It wasnt long after that Thelma was promoted to 1st Lt. Thelma received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Seton Hall University in 1951. Following her discharge she returned to Plainfield. Soon after, she heard that Muhlenberg Hospital was opening a Recovery Department. She applied for a position and was hired as Head Nurse of the Recovery Department. In that position Thelma was responsible for training nurses and the administration of service to the patients in her care. Muhlenberg was recognized as one of the best recovery sites in the country. Thelma was also the Head Nurse of Pediatrics. After many years there Thelma decided she needed a change and resigned. She then accepted a position as the school nurse at Hubbard Junior School in Plainfield, and remained there for twenty-six years until her retirement in 1985. Upon Thelmas retirement she volunteered in areas of her choice: she was active in the Twigs at Muhlenberg; supporter of Kings Daughters Day Care; was an officer in Plainfield University Womens Association; Star Fish (her love); she was a member of the United Family and Childrens Society as well as the American Association of University of Women. Thelma had a love for the opera, ballet and museums and traveled extensively throughout the United States the Caribbean and Europe. She was quite the hostess of many affairs at her home and was an excellent gourmet cook. Thelma leaves to cherish her memory her dear brothers Howard (Constance) of Middletown, Harry (Verna) of Kennesaw, GA, Joseph (Joan) of Piscataway and her beloved sister Margaret Vaughan of Somerset; sister-in-law Ernestine and her many nieces and nephews all of which she adored. Her brother Earl of Westfield predeceased her. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to St. Marks Episcopal Scholarship Fund in memory of Thelma Lambert.
