Obituary of Edith L. Larkin

Mrs. Edith Lucia Bratti Larkin, age 90, died on June 8th, 2008. Born in Bronx, NY on September 17, 1917, to immigrant parents, Edith resided in Forest Hills and Garden City, NY, Palm Beach Gardens and Melbourne, FL before moving to Sacramento five years ago. Edith was a teacher, a gardener, a superb athlete and a fantastic cook. In an era when few women went to college, she graduated cum laude with a BA degree from the College of New Rochelle, NY. She was an avid golfer whose natural talents and mental toughness made her a perennial champion at Nassau Country Club, Glen Cove, NY and in various Metropolitan Golf Associations. Playing well into her 70s, Edith routinely attracted a crowd of admiring golfers as she practiced her perfect swing at golf ranges in New York and Florida. Edith did everything with a gusto that was the admiration of her many friends and her large extended family. Her famous frankness was always tempered by her great sense of humor. Her husband, Dr. Vincent Larkin, chief of pediatrics at Wyckoff Heights Hospital in Brooklyn, Booth Memorial Hospital in Queens and Methodist Hospital of Brooklyn, predeceased her in 1985. Her brother Peter Bratti and sisters Hilda Bruschi and Yolanda Walsh also predeceased her. She is survived by her two daughters, Geraldine (William) Brick of Bridgewater, NJ and Adrienne Larkin (Maud Nerman) of Novato, CA; her two sons, Dr. Vincent dePaul Larkin, Jr. (Anne) of Scranton, PA and Eugene (Beverley) Larkin of Cincinnati, OH; her twin sister Enes Mulligan of Sacramento, CA; and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 16th at 9:00 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church in Martinsville, NJ. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 15th, from 3:30-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donation may be made to: College of New Rochelle, Annual Fund Office, 29 Castle Place, New Rochelle, NY 10805-2339
