Obituary of Irving Berger

Irving Berger, age 95, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he received his Masters Degree in organic chemistry from Brooklyn Poly-technical Institute. He resided in North Plainfield since 1950. Prior to retiring in 1978, Mr. Berger was employed as a Research Chemist at Schering Plough Corporation in Union for 37 years. He was an avid stamp collector since age 8, maintaining a meticulous international collection, an active member of Temple Sholom and a member of their men's group. His wife of 67 years, Sylvia Hausner Berger, predeceased him in January of this year. Surviving are a son, Eric Berger, MD of Manhattan; a daughter, Alice Schellhorn of Massachusetts; a grandson, Eric Schellhorn of California and a younger brother, Daniel Berger of Philadelphia. Funeral Services will be held 11:30 am on Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 West Eighth St., Plainfield, ( www.higginsfuneralhome.com) with Rabbi Joel Abraham officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin.
