Obituary of Martin P. Macaluso

Deacon Martin P. Macaluso, age 77, died on Tuesday, January 06, 2009 at his home. Deacon Martin was born in Brooklyn, NY and had lived in Canton, NY before moving to Plainfield where he resided for 47 years. Deacon Martin received a B.A and M.S. degree from Long Island University. He studied for the deaconate in Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University. He was ordained a Deacon on April 11, 1981. He obtained his certificate as a Port Chaplain from Houston International Seamen's Center in 1986. Deacon Martin had worked as a Teacher, Guidance Counselor, and Principal before retiring in 1995. He was the Port Chaplain for Stella Maris R.C. Chapel in Port Newark from 1986 through 1989. For the past 20 years he has been serving as a Parish Associate and Deacon at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Plainfield. He enjoyed traveling, researching religion and spending time with his family. Deacon Martin is predeceased by his parents, Martin Macaluso Sr. and Mary Rizzo. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carmen (Aguilera) Macaluso; two sons, Thomas Macaluso and his wife Maureen of Plainfield; Philip Macaluso and Barbara Rich of Brooklyn, NY; four daughters, Theresa Landry and her husband Stephen of North Plainfield; Catherine McCutcheon and her husband John of Columbus, OH; Rita Macaluso-Gregory and her husband Ronald of Mebane, NC; and Maria Gittens and her husband Joel of Bound Brook. Eleven grandchildren, Rita, Joseph, Sean, Christopher, Colleen, Craig, Erin, Richard, Rachel, Christian and Dominic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 10th at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's R.C. Church, Liberty Street, Plainfield. Visitation will be on Friday from 2-4 & 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. in the church. Entombment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, No. Arlington. Arrangements are by Higgins Home for Funerals, Plainfield.
