Obituary of Dr. Khagendra Nath Chatterjee
Dr Khagendra Nath Chatterjee, age 85, died on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was born and raised in Calcutta, India and lived in Scotch Plains for 35 years.He received his Medical Degree from Carmichael Medical College in Calcutta in 1946. After medical school, he served as a front line physician during the India-Pakistan Partition. He received further medical training at Harvard Medical School from 1960 to 1964. In 1968, he toured the medical facilities in the Soviet Union at the invitation of their Ministry of Health. He was Chief of Surgery in Lusaka, Zambia in the early 1970's. He returned to practice medicine in the United States in 1973. Dr. Chatterjee had a private practice in Woodbridge for many years. Dr. Chatterjee was a founding member of several Bengali organizations in NJ. He remained an active member of the Garden State Cultural Association (GSCA) and Scotch Plains/Fanwood Rotary Club.He is survived by his wife, Rani Chatterjee; his daughter, Meeta Chatterjee and her husband, Jeff Gardner; his son, Anjan Chatterjee and his wife, Lisa Santer; his brother, Ramendra Chatterjee and his grandchildren, Christopher and Eric Gardner.Viewing will be on Thursday, January 15th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung. On Friday at 12 noon, mourners are to meet at the funeral home to process to Franklin Memorial Park, Route 27 in North Brunswick for a 1:30 pm funeral service with cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Garden State Cultural Association, P.O. Box 308, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076 referencing the Dr. Khagendra Chatterjee Memorial Fund.
