Obituary of Sidney Herman Ruth

Sidney Herman Ruth, age 80, died on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was born and raised in Newark, had lived in Maplewood and Plainfield before moving to Piscataway.Mr. Ruth, a Korean War veteran, served in the United States Army and later served in the Army Reserves.He graduated from West Side High School and later Columbia University, School of Pharmacy where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy. After graduating he opened Maple Pharmacy in Jersey City. He later opened the Crystal Pharmacy in Morristown. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a Pharmacist for St. Michael's Hospital in Newark.Mr. Ruth was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Plainfield. He was also a member of the Association of Black Pharmacists. During his younger years, he enjoyed playing football and boxing.He is predeceased by his brother, Ronald Ruth, his sister, Arabella Van Duyne; and grandson Joseph Toomer III.Mr. Ruth is survived by his wife of 48 years, Anita L. Ruth; his son, Joao-Pierre S. Ruth of Piscataway; his daughters, Crystal Lynn Ruth-Velloso of Bedminster and Melody Mylana Toomer and her husband Joseph of Richmond, VA; his brothers, Albert Ruth, Bernard Ruth, Samuel Ruth; his sisters, Anna Allen and her husband Royal, Patricia Corker; his sister-in-law Shirley Ruth; his aunt Rushia Westbrook; his grandchildren, Rutger Velloso, Joshua Toomer and Justin Toomer.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 14th at 10:00 a.m. at United Presbyterian Church, 525 East Front St., Plainfield followed by interment at Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Higgins Home for Funerals, Plainfield.
