Obituary of Blanche Anderson
Blanche J. Anderson, died on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009, at J.F.K. Haven Hospice Center in Edison. Born and raised in Plainfield, she then resided in Edison.Blanche was an active member of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Plainfield. She graduated from Plainfield High School in 1947 and then attended West Virginia State College in Institute, West Virginia, receiving a BS degree in Psychology and Sociology in 1951. There, she became a member of Nu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Later, she would help found Theta Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, where she also served as President and Secretary. Blanche continued her education at Kean University in Newark, where she received a BA in Education in 1959. In 1977, she received a Masters in Education from The College of New Jersey and was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Society.Blanche started her career as an intern at Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, New York for two years. She went on to teach in Bordeaux, France for the U.S. Army and finally as an elementary school teacher for the Plainfield Board of Education for 38 years. She was promoted to Principal of the F.W. Cook School in Plainfield in 1987. After her retirement in 1995, Blanche worked as an Executive Assistant at Century 21 - John C. Campbell until 2004. She received a Distinguished Leadership Award from the United Negro College Fund in 1983.Blanche loved to do crosswords and collected stamps, however, her biggest passion was traveling. She was especially fond of Grand Case, St. Martin. Her favorite cruise lines were Celebrity and Silverseas.Blanche is predeceased by her parents, Stanley Evans and Mae Betty Bailey Evans; her two brothers Raymond Evans and Stanley Evans, Jr. Surviving is her daughter Dawne M. Anderson and her partner of thirty-five years, James E. Lambert; her beloved cat Billi Belle. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 West 8th Street, Plainfield.
