Obituary of Sr. Mary Alphonsus Kennedy
Sister Alphonsus, 88, died peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Kindred Hospital at Rahway.
Sister Alphonsus was born in Lincoln Park, NJ. She attended Mount Saint Mary Academy and entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1946. She receivd a BA degree in English from Caldwell College, NJ and an MA degree in English from Catholic University, DC. She has served as faculty member at Mount Saint Mary Academy, Watchung and at Mount Saint Mary College, Watchung; assistant principal, Holy Spirit High School, Absecon; council member, Sisters of Mercy of NJ; teacher, St. Pius X High School, Piscataway, NJ; director of evening division for Georgian Court College, Lakewood; and director of development of Alumnae at Mount Saint Mary Academy, Watchung. She continued to serve as archivist for the MSMA and as the Academy celebrated 100 years in 2008 Sister Alphonsus published her book
"Mount Saint Mary Academy - 100 Years - A Commemoration"
Sister Alphonsus was a revered educator and administrator.
She is survived by a brother, Thomas A. Kennedy, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ and a sister, Patricia K. Bodner of Danville, KY and many loving and caring nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place at Mount Saint Mary, Immaculate Conception Chapel on Monday, August 17, 2009 from 4:00 to 7:30 PM and on Tuesday, August 18 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM followed by Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 AM.
Burial in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ.
