Obituary of Charles Hand, Jr.

Charles Hand, Jr., age 88 entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 24, 2009 at Overlook Hospital in Summit. He was born in Tuskegee, AL to the late Charlie"Jack" Hand, Sr. and Mary Jane Hand. He had lived in Cincinnati, OH from 1936 to 1959, in Lakewood from 1959 to 2002 and then moved to Mountainside.Mr. Hand served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1943 during World War II. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas and Fort Hood, Texas before being deployed to North Africa and then to Italy.Prior to his retirement, Mr. Hand was a chemical operator for Ciba-Geigy in Toms River for over 30 years.Mr. Hand was a very involved member of the 6th Street Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Superintendent of Sunday School.He was very active in his retirement, volunteering at the Kimble Medical Center, the Lakewood Community Center and the Lakewood Library. He was an avid reader.He is predeceased by his wife, Alberta Hand in 1994 and his brothers, John and Bennie Hand.He is survived by his son, Charles Hand, III and his wife Yvonne of Piscataway; his sister, Mary Louise Alford; his grandson, Michael Hand of Chicago and a host of nephews and nieces and extended family and friends.Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 28th at 6:30 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 West 8th, Plainfield. Interment is private. Visitation will be from 5:30 until the time of the service.
